Lilmod UleLamed:
A Year of Learning and Working in Israel

"I'd like to learn in Jerusalem... but only for half a year ..."

"I'd love to take a year off to study in Israel but I can't afford it ..."

"I wish there were a way to live in Jerusalem for the year and work at something fulfilling ..."

·        First Semester:In the fall you will begin a semester of intensive study at the Conservative Yeshiva. Besides studying classical Jewish texts (such as Tanach and Talmud) on your level, you will also study Hebrew language and participate in a specially designed ongoing seminar on Informal Education in Israel Experience Programs.

·        Second Semester:Beginning in December, January or February you will be assigned work as an educator/Madrich/a with one or more of the winter/spring Ramah Israel programs.

·        Summer: Participants in the program are expected to work at a Ramah Camp or with the Ramah Israel Seminar (and will receive a salary bonus of $500 if they should do so).

Working with Ramah Programs in Israel
There are two possible tracks for working during the second semester:

1.     Working as a residential educator/Madrich for one of our semester-long high school program for North Americans: Tichon Ramah Yerushalayim (TRY): a formal study progam for 10th and 11th graders. February - June.

With this program you would be required to live in the dormitory with the chanichim, plan informal programs, become involved in hands-on educational work, serve as a role model and so on.

2.     Working as a residential Educator/Madrich/a for several short-term programs (10 days to 3 weeks) in the context of the Ramah Israel Experience. These may include 8th grade day school class trips, 10th grade supplementary Hebrew school groups, congregational family trips or some combination of all of these.

Note: The work for short-term programs may not occupy every week of the second semester. There will be some periods of time when you will be preparing for upcoming groups or working in other contexts of Ramah Israel. It is also possible that there will be enough of a hiatus for those who like to travel on their own in Israel or abroad. A tailor-made schedule will be worked out with each participant.

Finances
As a participant in Lilmod UleLamed you will pay no tuition fees, and will receive a living stipend of up to $1500 for the year, depending on the Ramah Israel track in which you work. In addition, as noted above, you will receive a salary bonus of $500 if you work either at a Ramah camp or with Ramah Israel Seminar during the summer following your year of studies. Additional financial assistance may be available on a limited basis to candidates who demonstrate real need.

Participants in Lilmod UleLamed will be responsible for their own flights to and from Israel, as well for their own room and board for the first semester. During the second semester, those working in Track A (long-term programs) will receive free room and board throughout the duration of the program to which they are assigned. Arrangements regarding room and board for those working in Track B (short-term groups) will be worked out on an individual basis, and may involve further living expenses, depending on the number of groups with which you will be working.

Health Insurance can be arranged by the participant, or by the program at the rate of approximately $1 per day.

Eligibility
The program will be limited to six participants, 21-30 years old, who have experience in informal or formal Jewish education and who demonstrate a passion for Jewish studies as well as for work in Jewish education (even if this is not your ultimate career choice). The candidate must be accepted by both the Conservative Yeshiva and Ramah Israel. You will be asked to submit an essay indicating your interests and goals in participating in this program.

You will have to be recommended by two people. One should be a Ramah Camp Director or the educational director at the school/camp/youth group for whom you have worked. The other reference can be a teacher, professor, rabbi or someone who is able to give us an impression of you both personally and academically.
